Kosovo

Kosovo is a **partially recognized state** in the Western Balkans — recognized by approximately **104 UN member states** (including Bangladesh, which recognized Kosovo in 2017), but **not a UN member**. Serbia does not recognize Kosovo's independence.

Kosovo is not a labour destination for Bangladeshi nationals. There is no established recruitment pathway or BD community.

RECOGNITION AND DIPLOMATIC STATUS:

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in **February 2008**. Bangladesh recognized Kosovo in **2017**. Kosovo maintains an **Embassy in Dhaka** — one of the few Balkan countries with a direct diplomatic presence in Bangladesh. However, this does not translate into labour market access.

Kosovo is not a member of the United Nations due to vetoes by Russia and China (both Serbia allies). It is also not a member of the EU, though it has a Stabilisation and Association Agreement. Kosovo uses the **euro (EUR)** as its currency despite not being in the eurozone.

GDP per capita approximately **$7,023** (2024, World Bank nominal) — about **2.6 times Bangladesh's level**. Kosovo has one of Europe's youngest populations (median age ~30) but also one of its highest unemployment rates (~20-25%). The economy depends heavily on remittances from the large Kosovar diaspora in Germany, Switzerland, and Scandinavian countries.

ENTRY — VISA REQUIRED:

Bangladeshi nationals require a traditional sticker visa. There is **no eVisa** system.

There is no Bangladesh Embassy in Kosovo. The nearest BD mission covering Kosovo is the **Embassy of Bangladesh in Berlin, Germany** (berlin.mofa.gov.bd, ~1,300km from Pristina). Non-resident accreditation confirmed.

LANGUAGE:

**Albanian** and **Serbian** are co-official languages. English is relatively more spoken among youth compared to other Balkan countries (due to strong US/KFOR influence post-1999). Still a hard barrier for BD nationals overall.
