DO NOT GO TO SYRIA. Syria is NOT a labour destination. It is an active conflict zone with a collapsed economy, a transitional government barely 18 months old, and no functioning labour market for foreign workers. Any job offer connected to Syria is almost certainly a trafficking scheme. This page exists to protect you.

DOCUMENTED TRAFFICKING OF BANGLADESHI WOMEN: Bangladesh's Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) identified 45 cases in a single year (2015-2016) of Bangladeshi women being promised domestic work in Lebanon or Jordan, then sold and transported to Syria for forced labour and sexual exploitation. Eight people were arrested in Bangladesh — mostly recruitment agency owners and staff. The victims were poor rural women who paid approximately 30,000 taka (~USD 380) for promised contracts paying USD 200/month. They never reached the promised destination.

This trafficking pattern operates through the Lebanon-Jordan-Syria corridor. Women recruited for "domestic work in Lebanon" or "housekeeping in Jordan" may be re-trafficked to Syria after arrival. The US TIP Report for Bangladesh specifically documents this pattern. If you are offered domestic work in Lebanon or Jordan through an unlicensed agent, verify the employer independently through the Bangladesh Embassy in Beirut or Amman before departing.

Syria's conflict began in 2011. The Assad regime fell in December 2024. Ahmed al-Sharaa (HTS leader) was declared transitional president in January 2025. The US recognised Syrian Interim Authorities on 13 May 2025. Territorial control remains fragmented: HTS controls most of western, central, and southern Syria, while Kurdish SDF forces control parts of the northeast. Active fighting has resumed in 2026. The US State Department states: "No part of Syria should be considered safe from violence."

Syria's economy has collapsed. GDP per capita fell from $2,806 in 2010 to approximately $670-830 currently — more than a 50% cumulative decline. The World Bank estimated reconstruction costs at $216 billion (October 2025). Of approximately 25.6 million people, 4.9 million are refugees abroad and 7.4 million are internally displaced.

Syria is classified as US TIP Tier 3 (2025) — the worst possible rating. Child soldier recruitment documented in 2024. US travel advisory: Level 4 — Do Not Travel. UK FCDO: advise against ALL travel. No consular support available from within Syria.

BMET clearance is irrelevant because Syria is not a viable labour destination. If you receive a work-visa offer connected to Syria, this is almost certainly a trafficking scheme. Report immediately to RAB (01779-529900), Emergency 999, Anti-Trafficking hotline 10921, or BMET (bmet.portal.gov.bd).

Syria does not have a functioning job market for foreign workers. The economy has contracted by more than 50% since 2010. GDP per capita is approximately $670-830 — below Bangladesh's level. Of the 25.6 million population, 4.9 million are refugees abroad and 7.4 million are internally displaced. Domestic unemployment is catastrophic with no foreign-worker demand.

The $216 billion reconstruction estimate (World Bank, October 2025) suggests large-scale construction employment may emerge in future years if political stability holds. But no reconstruction programme of scale has begun, and future labour demand would be filled by returning Syrian refugees and massive domestic unemployed first.

US lifted most sanctions post-Assad (May-July 2025). EU lifted economic sanctions, retained arms embargo. Financial infrastructure remains fragile.

Syria's economy has collapsed to a fraction of its pre-war size. GDP per capita fell from $2,806 in 2010 to approximately $670-830 currently (GNI $830 in 2024). The Syrian Pound has lost most of its value. Wages in SYP-denominated employment are below subsistence. Average wages are well below Bangladeshi levels. There is no economic rationale for labour migration to Syria.

There is no Bangladeshi worker community in Syria. The only documented Bangladeshi connection to Syria is trafficking: women recruited for domestic work in Lebanon/Jordan, then sold and transported to Syria. Syria is a country people are fleeing, not entering — 4.9 million refugees abroad, 7.4 million internally displaced. No settlement pathway exists.
