WHY THE EMBASSY EXISTS:

The BD Embassy in Tashkent serves as the **regional hub for Central Asia**, covering Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan (non-resident accreditation). Its presence reflects diplomatic coverage strategy, not a labour corridor.

ECONOMIC CONTEXT:

Uzbekistan has a GDP per capita of approximately **$3,162** (2024, nominal) — close to Bangladesh's level (~1.17x). Population approximately **36.4 million**, the most populous country in Central Asia. The Uzbekistani Som (UZS) is the national currency.

UZBEKISTAN IS A LABOUR EXPORTER:

Uzbekistan is itself a **major labour-exporting country**. Approximately **2 million Uzbek workers** are employed abroad, primarily in **Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey**. Remittances from these workers are a significant portion of Uzbekistan's GDP. The country competes with Bangladesh in some of the same labour markets.

Uzbekistan's historical TIP concern was **state-sponsored forced cotton harvesting** — a practice that has been significantly reformed since 2020 following international pressure (the "Cotton Campaign" boycott was lifted in 2022). Current concerns relate to Uzbek migrants exploited abroad.

There is no bilateral labour agreement between Bangladesh and Uzbekistan. No BMET-registered agencies recruit for Uzbekistan. With comparable GDP, there is no wage arbitrage to drive BD labour migration.
